The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations and acts as a global think tank. The mission of the Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) is to carry out cutting edge research on risks and adaptation related to environmental hazards and global change. The institute’s research promotes policies and programmes to reduce these risks, while taking into account the interplay between environmental and societal factors. UNU-EHS research is always conducted with the underlying goal of connecting solutions to development pathways. Beyond its research mandate, UNU-EHS is actively engaged in education. The Pan African Cooperation and Educational Technologies Programme at UNU-EHS/VIE aims to strengthen research, educational, and institutional capacities of UNU-EHS in global South with a focus on Africa. PACET fosters cooperation between UNU and African institutions in higher education, research, policy, and practice to develop innovative methods and appropriated solutions to address challenges particularly within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Agenda 2063 of the African Union.

Pan African University Institute for Water and Energy Sciences (incl. Climate Change – PAUWES)

PAUWES is one of the five hubs of the Pan African University (PAU), the culmination of continental initiatives of the Commission of the African Union to crate excellence and revitalize higher education and research in Africa. It is hosted at the University of Tlemcen in Algeria and gathers excellent know- how to tackle the challenges faced in different African countries with regards to water, energy and climate change. PAUWES core mandate includes conducting practice-oriented thematic research as well as research dealing with socio-economical, nexus and interdisciplinary issues in the field of water, energy and climate change; and the replication and dissemination of best practices on the continent while developing strategic networks on the continent and beyond.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. it aims to address the adverse human interaction interference with the climate system. In the frame of its activities, it strives to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. The secretariat provides technical expertise and assists in the analysis and review of climate change information reported by Parties and in the implementation of the Kyoto mechanisms. It also maintains the registry for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) established under the Paris Agreement, a key aspect of implementation of the Paris Agreement. It further support initiatives towards climate action by providing dedicated capacity building support to different stakeholders and actors in different parts of the world.
