Webinar ‘Centering Care in Climate Transitions: Evidence and Action for Women Green Entrepreneurs’

Grassroots women entrepreneurs across green sectors such as climate-smart agriculture, clean energy, and the circular economy contribute significantly to climate mitigation and adaptation. At the same time, they are compounded by their vulnerability to climate change, which amplifies their caregiving and resource management roles, resulting in limited time, mobility, and financial readiness. The burden of unpaid care work like water and fuel collection, childcare, food preparation and care for sick family members falls disproportionately on women. This burden is not shared equally across households, communities, or institutions, and it intensifies with every climate shock. Who else is supposed to carry it? And why are these realities still not reflected in the systems designed to support women entrepreneurs?

Nolwazi Dlamini
Population & Development Specialist | Sociologist | Researcher | Policy Practitioner South Africa

Dr Nolwazi C. Dlamini is a South African sociologist, population and development specialist, researcher and policy practitioner with extensive experience in government, academia and evidence-informed development planning. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and is a former Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Johannesburg.

Her work covers population dynamics, gender equality, families, the care economy, social policy, adolescent and youth development, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, women’s economic participation and sustainable development. She centrally examines how structural inequalities, including poverty, gendered unpaid care responsibilities and unequal access to resources and services, shape social and economic opportunities.

Dr Dlamini translates population and social research into policy, planning and programme responses. Her current interests include gender-responsive development planning, social protection, climate resilience, the care economy and inclusive economic development, and she contributes to African and international research and policy collaborations that connect evidence with practical development responses.

At the Greenovations Climate and Care Webinar, she brings a South African population and development policy perspective, focusing on integrating unpaid care and climate vulnerability into government planning and women’s economic participation.

Belinda Putterill
Managing Director
USE-IT Ethekwini Waste Materials Recovery Industry Development

Belinda Putterill is the Managing Director of USE-IT Waste Beneficiation (RF) NPC in South Africa. She leads practical circular economy and waste beneficiation initiatives that support job creation, township enterprise development, and landfill diversion. Belinda works closely with grassroots and women entrepreneurs in the waste sector, helping to strengthen inclusive green value chains and improve access to skills, markets, and funding. She is a strong advocate for recognising women as climate solution leaders and for making climate finance more accessible to women-led green enterprises.

Veronica Baracat

Veronica Baracat is a gender specialist with more than 20 years of experience in leadership roles across international networks and institutions, the United Nations system, and government agencies. At UN Women in Argentina, she works with the private sector to advance gender equality as a driver of business success. She has extensive experience planning, implementing, and managing programs and projects, and building partnerships among international organizations, NGOs, governments, and companies. She holds a Master’s in Gender Studies from the London School of Economics. In 2022, Revista Noticias named her one of the “10 Argentines of the Year.”
